Yesterday was Technology Day at the CiscoExpo 2008 event in Milano. Among the morning’s speakers I particularly enjoyed listening to Professor Maurizio Decina; his knowledge of the Internet and Telecom worlds is impressive and always one step ahead of everyone, and his speeches are stimulating and provocative.
Among many things, I took note of his definitions of the evolution of Internet:
- Web 1.0: the web
- Web 2.0: Social web (today)
- Web 3.0: Semantic web
- Web 4.0: Ubiquitous web
According to Prof. Decina we are moving towards an “Internet of Things” and “Internet of Services”, where objects and services will be naturally (almost magically) linked by Internet to do their job. In this context, the role of service providers can be of primary importance, as long as they understand and make the most of the opportunites that lie in this evolution.
Nobody can be sure of how their business will be in the future, not Microsoft, not Google.
In another presentation, Cisco affirmed its belief that Web 3.0 is really a synonym for “Video anywhere, any media, any device”, that the video component in network traffic will continue to increase, and service providers will need to provide adequate infrastructures for it.
Eco-wifi
I attended the afternoon session on Wireless technology, where I was impressed by the story of the “Grotte dell’Angelo” (Caves of the Angel) located in Pertosa near Salerno. Here a wi-fi network is used to control the lighting system and make sure that only the areas where there are visitors are lit up, and after the visitors move on the area becomes dark again. This is very important because light has a negative impact on that type of natural environment.
